    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

An ultrasound is a method of obtaining images of your internal organs by directing inaudible sound waves into your body with a hand-held instrument called a transducer. As the sound waves make contact with blood, tissue, and bone, portions of the sound waves “echo” back to the transducer. These echoes are then analyzed by a computer to produce an image of the organs on a TV-like screen. Doppler ultrasound, a special application of ultrasound, measures the direction and speed of blood cells as they move through vessels. The movement of blood cells causes a change in pitch of the reflected sound waves (Doppler Effect). A computer collects and processes the sounds and creates graphs or pictures that represent the flow of blood through the blood vessels.

Health ultrasound/s package takes between forty minutes to one hour depending on your vascular anatomy and your body type as well as the ease or difficulty in finding any abnormalities of the organs being studied.  One of the others ultrasound/s packages takes between twenty to thirty minutes. You will receive your results within 5 business days. A Board Certified Radiologist will personally review your case.

Ultrasound examinations are painless, fast and easy. After you are positioned on the examination table, the sonographer will apply a conductive gel between the transducer  and your skin and then glide the transducer firmly against your body, moving it back and forth over the area of interest until the desired images are captured. There may be varying degrees of discomfort from pressure as the transducer is pressed against the area being examined.

If a Doppler ultrasound study is performed, you may actually hear pulse-like sounds that change in pitch as the blood flow is monitored and measured. After an ultrasound exam, you can return back to normal duties.

Ultrasound carries no risk for complications nor any extensive bio-effects during the examination.

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. You will need to remove some clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined. You may be asked to wear a gown during the procedure.

Abdominal Ultrasound – Preferably empty stomach, not to eat for 2 hours prior to appointment (for abdominal and  aorta scan).

Echocardiograms/Venous/Carotid/Arterial Ultrasounds- No food preperation or fasting needed.

Ultrasound scanning is noninvasive, painless and uses no radiation. Ultrasound is widely available, easy-to-use and less expensive than other imaging methods.

Ultrasound scanning provides real-time imaging and gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on x-ray images. Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood as it flows through a blood vessel and gives a clear picture of inner part of blood vessel. Ultrasound causes no health problems and may be repeated as often as is necessary if medically prescribed.
